What is An Ebook

An ebook or “electronic book” is a book or booklet that is available in an electronic format. eBooks are typically available in Adobe PDF or eBook Reader format, or in Microsoft's LIT format, so that they can be easily read not only on computer screens but on portable devices such as Pocket PC’s, mobile phones and iPods.

What Impact Have Ebooks Had On Publishing?

Ebooks have had a major impact on the publishing world.

Readers love them. One reason is that they can get instant delivery. They can purchase a book from the comfort of home using a credit card and then download it immediately. And they can carry a whole library around with them wherever they go on a small flash card or other storage device.

Ebooks have also been revolutionary for authors. Traditionally it was very difficult for a writer to find a publisher and become a published author. With ebooks, authors can take matters into their own hands. Not only is it easier to get published but writers can put more of the revenue from their books into their own pockets.

How Big is the Ebook Publishing Industry?

The ebook publishing industry is huge and it is growing fast! Let’s look at a few facts and figures.

EBooks Corporation Ltd., which provides more than 70,000 e-book titles to consumers at eBooks.com, estimated that the e-book market hit $130 million in 2006, and they expected it to reach $220 million in 2007. “Five years out, the total e-book market will be between $3 billion and $5 billion,” projected Stephen Cole, managing director of eBooks.

And it’s not just in North America. In the five years up to 2007, sales in Japan of mobile-phone novels—books that you download and read, usually in installments, on the screen of your mobile phone—jumped from zero to over ¥10 billion ($82m) per year.

In South Korea, one of the most wired nations, the country's e-book market in 2006 was around 140 billion won (US$144 million), a surge of 220 per cent from the year before and forecast to surpass the 300-billion-won mark in 2007.

This is an industry that’s growing really fast, but it is also one that is easy to enter and become involved in.
